Holidays in Havana have all the romance you would expect in such a legendary hotbed of Latin culture. Old Havana is much as it was when Ernest Hemingway sipped his mojitos in La Bodeguita: old colonial buildings, cruising Cadillacs and cigar chomping old men sitting in cafes. Not to mention the heady sounds of salsa and rumba wafting through the air. New Havana is a different story – tower blocks and chic bars cater for Cuba's business set and Castro's revolution seems a long way away.

Travel to Havana with Thomson and you'll have a choice of good accommodation. And while we're not exactly talking bargain holidays, Havana is by no means as exclusive and expensive as some Caribbean destinations. In Old Havana there's the elegant Hotel Nh Parque Central. The views from the Greek-style swimming pool are stunning. And every evening there's a Cuban band in the bar. Alternatively, there's the Saratoga, right in the centre of Habana Vieja. It was built in the 1890s and became a hotel in the 1930s, so has plenty of authentic atmosphere.

Sightseeing, dining out and nightlife are the main attractions of holidays in Havana. But that doesn't mean you'll be starved of sunbathing and swimming. All our featured hotels have pools and sun terraces. And if you're longing to be beside the seaside, you can always take a trip to the Playas del Esta ('Eastern Beaches'), around 20km away.
