An introduction to Alaro

Tucked right inland, little Alaro is a far cry from the tourist resorts you'll find along Majorca's coast. This traditional town's all about tapas and siestas, so if it's an authentic slice of Spain you're after, Alaro's just the ticket. What's more, the surrounding countryside is just gorgeous. Made up of plains, pines and peaks, it's one of Majorca's most popular areas for walking and hiking. In particular, people like to make the trek up to the top of Puig des Castell, a nearby rocky outcrop crowned by an old ruined fortress. Alaro's castle dates back to Moorish times and its battlements seem to almost grow out of the rock face. Now in partial ruins, it's a wonderful place to visit and features in most Majorca guidebooks as a 'must see'. Standing at 800 metres above sea level, it's certainly a stiff climb to the top. It takes about two hours but it's definitely worth the effort - amazing panoramic views stretch all the way to Palma and out to the sea. At the very top you'll find a little chapel and a restaurant where you can drink in not only the jaw-dropping views, but a well-earned glass of sangria, too.
